Shoreham & Southwick

News

Last Saturday a small group of us visited some of the Brighton festival open houses. It was a sunny, warm day and it was lovely to wander around the streets. The art we saw ranged from the frankly weird to the stunning with lots in between, always interesting. It was also fascinating to look around houses not always open to the public! We saw the giant festival sculptures on the Hove seafront. They are rather strange and appear to be made from twigs and straw and plaster – I hope they survive our coastal weather! All in all, a very enjoyable outing and I would recommend it to others – the Adur festival in June has open houses too.

It made me think how lucky we are to live in this area – as well as the sea and the downs we have a range of cultural activities to suit all tastes. It is also what the u3a is all about, providing stimulation and learning whilst spending time with others and enjoying ourselves. In essence living, learning and laughing.

Our open day this year will be on Friday 10 July from 1.30-4.00pm in the hall at the Shoreham Centre. This will be your opportunity to sign up for classes from September 2026.

Join the Sussex Dolphin Project and discover the remarkable marine mammals that call the Sussex coast home. This inspiring talk will introduce you to the species living in the Eastern English Channel, share how Sussex Dolphin Project is working to better understand and protect them, and show how you can play a meaningful part in safeguarding their future. This event is free for members. Non-members £4.00

2-3.30pm in the main hall at the Shoreham Centre

We are very grateful to Helen Pelluet and June Deller who have run the jigsaw library at our monthly Friday events for many years, enabling happy hours of puzzling for lots of members. Helen will retire at the end of July and if anyone would like to pick up the mantle, please contact Lesley Mason on groups1@shorehamandsouthwicku3a.org.uk to find out more.
